September 23, 1862

Sold in Christie's/Caren auction 6/15/2017 = $3000

THE NEW YORK HERALD, Sept. 23, 1862  A terrific issue with this historic content, as the entire text of the famous Emancipation Proclamation, wherein President Abraham Lincoln freed all slaves in both the North & the South, is contained in the first two columns of the front page. More typically this text is found on inside pages of most newspapers.
The heading at the top of the first column boldly reads: "A PROCLAMATION by the President Of The United States" "Operations of the Confiscation Act" "All Slaves in Rebellion January 1, 1863, to Be Free" "The President Renews the Offer to Pay for Slaves of Loyalists" (see). This document is signed in type near the top of the second column: Abraham Lincoln. The balance of the front page is mostly taken up with Civil War reports and includes two one column maps as well (see).
Complete in 8 pages and an uncommon never bound & never trimmed issue with original wide margins.  It folds out to one large sheet of newsprint. Some light, even toning, two folds with some wear at the the folds and minor wear at the margins. Page 2 has several archival mends not visible on the front page. The text of the Emancipation Proclamation is unaffected by any wear.
