PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, April 16, 1864.
* Fort Pillow Massacre w/ map
* Nathan Bedford Forrest
* 1st report coverage
Front page heads at the top of the first column about the famous massacre at Fort Pillow: "Fiendish Slaughter" "Capture of Fort Pillow By The Rebels" "Horrible Barbarities Of The Rebels Reported" "Black & White Soldiers Murdered in Cold Blood" "Women & Children Killed" "Gen. Lee In Command Of The Rebels" "The Inhuman Massacre Indorsed by Chalmers" "Scene Of Most Horrible Butchery" "Negro Soldiers Buried Alive" "They Work Themselves Out of the Ground and are Saved" "The Rebels Shelled Out Of Paducah"
Also has a 5 1/4 by 4 1/2 inch map: "Region of the Rebel Forrest's Operations" "The Capture of Fort Pillow--Scene of the Attack upon Paducah--Columbus Threatened by the Enemy--Route Taken by Forrest to Memphis." As might be expected, this massacre caused considerable outrage in the North.
Other news of the day including much on the Civil War. Minor foxing and small binding slits along the spine, otherwise in nice condition.
