May 18, 1875

NEW-YORK TIMES, May 18, 1875  On page 5 under "The Turf" is a report: "Louisville Jockey Club" which has details about the inaugural of the Louisville Jockey Club, mentioning that "...upwards of 12,000 spectators were in attendance."  The report continues: "The great event of the day was the Kentucky Derby, which was won by Aristedes, making the fastest time ever made by a three year old....The fifteen horses started at the first tap of the drum, and got away in beautiful style..." and more about the other racing events of the day, plus summaries of each race.
A very notable, if inconspicuous, report on the very first running of the Kentucky Derby which continues to this day as perhaps the most famous horse race of the season.
Complete in ten pages, light browning at the margins, an archival mend to an inside leaf, generally very nice condition.
