THE NEW YORK TIMES, April 10, 1865
* General Robert E. Lee surrenders
* Battle of Appomattox Court House
* Lincoln's assassination a few days away
We are pleased to offer this terrific & much desired issue on the end of the Civil War. The surrender of Lee at Appomattox has always been a keystone issue for any Civil War collection, and the fame & popularity of the New York Times is the title in which this content is most coveted.
Not only is this the Times with this key content, but the issue was never bound nor trimmed. Great first column heads take two-thirds of the column & use type of uncommonly large size (see photos) reading: "UNION" "VICTORY ! " "PEACE ! " "Surrender of General Lee and His Whole Army" "Final Triumph of the Army of the Potomac" and more. Plus there are additional heads in the 4th column as well, including: "The Victory" and "Thanks to God, the Giver of Victory". The editorial on page 4 focuses on the surrender and the closing moments of the Civil War. Newspapers on the surrender of Lee to Grant at Appomattox don't get much better than this.
This newspaper is in very nice condition. Never bound nor trimmed (desired) with just a bit of light foxing, and the margins are uncommonly nice & even for a never-bound newspaper. It folds out to be one large sheet of newsprint.
