* Dred Scott slavery trial
This is a pair of issues, with almost the entire front page of each taken up with: "The Opinion of Judge Curtis In The Dred Scott Case". The Dred Scott Decision is ranked by Time magazine as one of the top ten Supreme Court decisions of all time. It determined that people of African descent brought into the United States and held as slaves were not protected by the Constitution and were not U.S. citizens. Since passage of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the decision has not been a precedent case, but retains historical significance as perhaps the worst decision ever made by the Supreme Court.
The decision was 7 - 2, with Judge Curtis being one of just 2 dissenting votes. It is his lengthy opinion which appears in these two issues, and which apparently is concluded in another.
Four large-size folio pages, rejoined at the spine, minor archival repair at the blank spine of the June 6 issue, very nice condition.
