THE EDINBURGH EVENING COURANT, Scotland, April 10, 1775

* Prelude to Revolutionary War

Close to half of the front page is taken up with details of the New England Restraining Act, a very significant Act of Parliament which made it forbidden for the New England colonies to trade with any country but England after July 1 (see for portions). This was a one of the Acts that would ultimately lead to the Revolutionary War.
Page 2 has a letter from Boston which includes: "The Americans are diligently disciplining an army of themselves, & forming a magazine of provisions, arms, and ammunition...& have got into the country considerable quantities of warlike stores...The Virginians have drafted from their militia 15,000 men who in training. They are called the American Legion. The people of Maryland have done the same & are providing uniforms for their men...The province of Pennsylvania has done the same. The province of Connecticut has offered 20,000 men to defend American liberties. There are several officers among the Americans who have seen a great deal of actual service, acquired great honour in the last war, particularly Colonel Washington (who with his Virginians covered General Braddock's retreat), Colonel Armstrong, etc. There are many brave officers among them..." with more. This is rare mention of George Washington  mentioned as one of the experienced military men who could lead the Americans, referencing his involvement in the French & Indian War.

Four pages, a few small archival mends to minor margin tears, generally very nice condition.
