Item # 592357

August 22, 1859

NEW YORK TIMES, August 22, 1859

* Charles Blondin, the Niagara Falls tightrope walker*
* Harry Colcord, Blondon's manager on his back

Page 3 has a half column article headed: "Blondin Carries Man Across Niagara River on His Shoulders", being a very detailed account of the "Great Blondin", the famous tightrope walker, and one of his several exhibitions at the Niagara River. Blondin was the sensation of the day and remains the person others are compared to when exhibitions of tightrope walking are done anywhere in the world today.

The article begins: "Probably the largest crowd that ever assembled at Niagara Falls was present there yesterday to see Mons. Blondin cross the Niagara River upon is rope carrying a man upon his shoulders...." with much, much more. That man on his back was his manager. Further on is mentioned: "...M. Blondin occupied something over half an hour in crossing, most of the time being spent in his performances on the rope..." and ending with: "...The daring feat was most successfully accomplished, and we understand M. Blondin will repeat it on Wednesday of next week." (see for the full text).

This issue is complete in 8 pages and is in excellent condition.
