August 20, 1862

NEW YORK TRIBUNE, Aug. 20, 1862  Page 4, the editorial page, has one of the more famous letters by any newspaper editor from the Civil War era. Keep in mind that the "Tribune" was Horace Greeley's newspaper, over two columns are taken up with: "The Prayer Of Twenty Millions" written to Abraham Lincoln. It is a harsh letter which includes near the beginning: "I do not intrude to tell you--for you must know already--that a great proportion of those who triumphed in your election...are sorely disappointed and deeply pained by the policy you seem to be pursing with regard to the slaves of Rebels..." with much more. The letter continues with a the nine points Greeley notes as problems with Lincoln's policies. The editorial is signed in type: Horace Greeley (see).
A few days latter this same letter, along with Lincoln's famous response to Greeley, would be printed in most newspapers across the country as it received considerable attention. Terrific to have this letter in Greeley's own newspaper.
Complete in 8 pages, very nice condition.
