December 19, 1789

GAZETTE OF THE UNITED STATES, New York Dec. 19, 1789  The front page features a nice letter "To George Washington, President of the United States" from the town of Marblehead, Massachusetts, concerning Washington's recent visit there, which is followed by his response headed: "To the Inhabitants of the Town of Marblehead" and signed in type: G. Washington (see).
Page 2 has a report from Richmond which begins; "On Monday the twelve amendments to the Constitution of the United States, proposed by Congress were agreed to by the House of Delegates..." and also mentions Washington's proclamation for a day of Thanksgiving (see). Page 3 has am item from North Carolina which includes: "...is that the Convention of this state, contrary to general expectation has ratified the Constitution--and that our Grand Master, the late Governor Caswell is dead..." (see).
Most of a column on the back page is "Mr. Adams's Letters" from Amsterdam, dated Oct. 27, 1780, signed by him in type: John Adams (see). The back page also has various "Proceedings of Congress".
Four pages, very nice condition.
Considered by many as the most significant newspaper of the 18th century, particularly during this, the formative year of the new federal government, as the Gazette was the mouthpiece of all matters political. Most pronouncements from Congress & the President were printed first in this newspaper.
