THE PENNSYLVANIA JOURNAL & THE WEEKLY ADVERTISER, Philadelphia, Feb. 1, 1783

* Revolutionary War ending

The very handsome masthead features an uncommonly large engraving (see). The front page has a message from the President of Pennsylvania, signed by him in type: John Dickinson, concerning the: "...more effectual suppression of all intercourse & commerce with the enemies of the United States of America..." (see).
Page 2 has a letter to the Early of Shelburne which begins: "I can by no means entertain so base & injurious an opinion of your Lordship as to imagine that you advised or promoted that impolitic & destructive measures, the declaration of American Independence. No,...I have too great an opinion of your wisdom & integrity...to suppose you guilty of such a breach of the indispensable duty of your profession..." with much more, and near the end: "...If there really are not resources in this nation...to reduce America to her former obedience, let only three or four of the provinces be annexed to Great Britain & the other divided into distinct republics...Then the liberties of Europe would not be in danger...".
Page 3 has: "A Proclamation" by the governor of New York, issued--as the Americans note: "...to keep up the farce, among other things, thought of setting his poor deluded subjects in New York, to keep a day of thanksgiving for the trifling advantages his master's arms hath gained in the last summer..." with the proclamation beginning: "Whereas it hath graciously pleased Almighty God to bestow signal victories on his Majesty's arms & to defeat the united efforts of combined nations..." (see)
Page 3 has an ad by noted Jewish financier: "Isaac Franks" (see). Four pages, foxing throughout, a printing error causes no ink to a nickel-size area on the front page affecting only ads, otherwise nice condition.
