April 27, 1865

THE DAILY PROGRESS, Raleigh, North Carolina, April 27, 1865  Raleigh was one of the last major cities of the South to fall into the hands of Sherman, surrendering on April 13, 1865 just one day before Lincoln was assassinated. This rare Confederate title is from the latter months of the Civil War.
This issue is obviously from just after the end of the Civil War with some very notable front page content concerning the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. The top of the first column has: "Northern News" "An Account of Mr. Lincoln's Death by An Eye-Witness" "Letter From J. Wilkes Booth" with the article on the closing moments of Lincoln's life before very descriptive, and includes much on the grief of Mary Todd Lincoln (see). This is followed by a very lengthy letter headed: "The Murderer of Mr. Lincoln--Extraordinary Letter of John Wilkes Booth--Proof that He Meditated His Crime Months Ago--His Excuses for the Contemplated Act--His Participation in the Execution of John Brown". The letter is signed by him in type: J. Wilkes Booth. (see)
The back page has a lengthy editorial concerning the closing moments of the Civil War and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Also: "Effect of the Death of Mr. Lincoln In Canada" "Are We to Be Governed By Secessionists" "What Our Northern Friends Say of Our City--The City of Raleigh" "Brig. Gen. Joseph A. Cooper" "Sic Semper Tyrannis" and more.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, a minor printing error in the upper right, otherwise in truly excellent condition.
