October 04, 1781

THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, October 4, 1781  Inside has a full column letter signed in type by: Major General Greene, written from "Ambler's Plantation, opposite James River, July 8, 1781" with fine coverage of the Battle of Green Spring (Jamestown Ford), Virginia. In this battle Cornwallis abandons Williamsburg & prepares to cross the James River. General 'Mad' Anthony Wane attempts to engage Cornwallis' vastly superior British force but retreats in good order. This was the last major land battle in Virginia prior to Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown. Carrying over to the last page is a: "Return of the Killed, Wounded & Missing of the Detachment commanded by General Wayne in a Skirmish with the British...near the Green Springs in Virginia" (see photos) This is then followed by yet another: "...Letter from an Officer of Rank..." concerning this Virginia battle (see).
Eight pages, never bound nor trimmed, 9 by 12 inches, nice condition.
