February 14, 1865
RICHMOND WHIG & PUBLIC ADVERTISER, Virginia, Feb. 14, 1865 Not only one of the less common titles from the capital of the Confederacy, but from quite late in the war as few issues from 1865 tend to surface. And the content is very good as well, as the front page contains nearly a full column: "Bill To Establish the Flag Of The Confederate States" with a description of it in the first paragraph (see: note minor wear to a portion of one line). It also has an introductory paragraph headed: "The New Confederate Flag" (see).
There is much other war-related content on the ftpg. including: "the Late Gen. Pegram", an editorial beginning: "Galling and inexpressibly humiliating as subjugation to Yankees would be, Southern men might possible hear it. Beggared, exiled, they might find a home & carve out a fortune in other lands...At the most, they might find relief in death, and die with arms in their hands, fighting against overwhelming odds..." with much more (see for portions). Also: "The News--Gen. Terry's Treatment of Renegades--From South Carolina" "From the United States--From Grant's Army" "From Fort Fisher" and more.
Page 2 has much on: "The Peace Mission--Lincoln's Message Communicating All the Correspondence.." which includes documents signed in type by A. Lincoln, U.S. Grant, Jefferson Davis, and Alexander Stephens. Also: "Spirit of the Army" Page 3 has: "The News--The Way Yankees Treat Helpless Women and Old Negroes" "Additional from the United States" "Meeting of the 15th Va. Regiment" and a "Proclamation" by the President of the Confederacy for a day of thanksgiving, signed in type: Jefferson Davis. And more on the back page as well, with another article headed: "The Proposed Flag".
Four pages, water staining does not deter readability, otherwise in nice condition.
