THE GAZETTE, Portland, Maine, March 18, 1799 A great rarity which recently came into our inventory, as this is the earliest newspaper from Maine we have offered in some years, in fact one of the earliest to be had. This is the volume 1, number 6 issue. Keep in mind that Maine did not become a state until 1820.
Page 2 has a lengthy document headed: "By The President of the United States of America, A PROCLAMATION" for a day of thanksgiving & prayer, signed in type by him: John Adams (see for portions). Also inside: "Further Confirmation of Truxton's Victory" "French Plot--Confirmed" "American Spirit" and reports from the "Legislature of the Union". There is also a note: "In Tom Paine's paper of Nov. 28th is an article mentioning--'For 2 days it has been announced that the American frigate Constellation of 40 guns has taken a French frigate on the American coast.' Paine used to call himself a prophet. The Insurgent was captured the 11th of February". (see) Also a brief note of a duel in the U.S. army.
Four pages, some foxing spots and light damp staining, generally nice condition.
