THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, August, 1758  Among the articles within are: "A Description of Cherburg" which is accompanied by a foldout plate of it titled: "A Genuine Plan of Cherburg" which also includes an inset: "A Plan of Cherburg Before the Demolition of its Fortifications in 1689" (see). This is the only plate or map called for in this issue. Other articles include: "Interesting Query on Blood Letting" "Jewish Prayers for the Dead" and "Journal of the Siege of Louisbourg" which takes four pages.
But the best content would be the fine & detailed account of the failed attempt of the British at the Battle of Ticonderoga. This is the British General Abercrombie's account and is datelined: "Camp at Lake George, July 12, 1758".  It contains much detail of his loss at the battle, despite his having 12,000 men against the French under General Montcalm having just 3000 men (see for the full text).
Complete 56 page issue with a full title/index page featuring an engraving of St. John's Gate. Measures 5 by 8 inches & is in very nice, clean condition.
A very nice French & Indian War era magazine from the "mother country" with a wide range of varied content. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
