January 03, 1891
Here is a complete bound volume of the first illustrated newspaper in the world, THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, England, containing all 26 weekly issues for January 3 to June 27, 1891.
An absolute treasure-trove of terrific prints, and this volume is in much better condition than most. Having been a dealer in this (and other) titles for over 33 years we have handled hundreds of these bound volumes. The internal pages and prints in this volume are among the best we have seen.
Mentions are only some of the highlights, and the photos are just a sampling of those within this volume, there being simply too many to photograph all.
Some of the prints include: "Skating Match at Littleport" showing ice skating; "Tobogganing in Surrey" "Shopping In New York on New Year's Eve"; a terrific doublepage centerfold: "The Ghost Dance of the Sioiux Indians In North America"; a nice cowboy scene from a Western town: "The Indian Rising in America--Latest News!"; a large number of prints of Siberia; "Views in Alaska & on the Coasts of the Behring Sea" has 8 scenes; "The Rising of the North American Indians: 'Braves' Leaving the Reservation" is an Indian scene; "Sketches in Chili,South America"; several prints of the Salvation Army; "The Great Schools of England--Winchester"; a fullpg. print of "Sir Walter Scott" "Quicksilver Mining in Mexico" "Views In Iceland" "The Late General W. T. Sherman" "Sketches at Monte Carlo" "A Lecture of Fencing at the Lyceum Theatre" "Football Match between England & Scotland..." (rugby); "the Universities' Boat Race 'Are You Ready?' "Football Association Challenge Cup Match..." (soccer); a small print of: "The Late Mr. P. T. Barnum"; four full page prints of: "Middlesborough, Kentucky" "The First Day of the Season" shows a woman with a tennis racket; scenes in New Zealand; "The Derby: The Fall of the Flag" "The Great Schools of England: Rugby" "Ascot Races..." "William Makepeace Thackeray"; a nice color cover of the: "Summer Number of the Illustrated London News, 1891 - Eagle Joe" (see), and so much more!
There is a great color full page print: "Jockeys of the Day" shows 12 of them (see).
Contains 864 pages, still bound in original three-quarter leather bindings showing minor wear and some loss, with a more modern brown paper covering (see). The issues can be easily disbound for individual issue sale. The interior pages are in excellent & very clean condition with just a few margin tears.
