July 08, 1861
THE DAILY JOURNAL, from Wilmington, North Carolina, dated July 8, 1861 Has "Confederate States Of America" printed in the masthead which is rarely seen on Southern newspapers from the Civil War. Has all ads and notices on the frontpage. Page 2 has a report: "Death of Governor Ellis". The report about the death of North Carolina's governor states, in part: "...Ever since, a dying man, he has stood like a martyr at the state, concealing as far as possible his sufferings...we honestly believe a martyr to his devotion to the cause of the South. He was a true North Carolinian, a brave man, a noble patriot..." An editorial talks about "Our Military", and there is war-related content on this page as well.
Page 3 has: "Late And Important From The Seat Of War!" "Fight At Newport News!" Includes: "The Report Of The Battle Between Gens. Johnston & Patterson Contradicted". There is also a report: "England and the Confederate States", plus there are a few recruiting ads, and a notice about deserters of the military. In honor of the death of the governor, all columns on pgs. 2 & 3 are black-bordered.
This is a complete issue in 4 pages measuring approximately 15 x 22.5 inches and is in very good condition. See photos for details.
