On the sixth page of this issue is a detailed account of a duel involving DeWitt Clinton, famous politician and principal promoter of the Erie Canal.
The account begins: "A duel was fought, on Saturday se'nnight, on the New-Jersey shore, opposite New York, between the Hon. DEWITT CLINTON and JOHN SWARTWOUT..." & more.
Hereafter is the proposal offered by Clinton as "the basis of an accommodation". Includes the text of the duel arrangements, followed by a detailed account of the duel by Mr. Smith, one of the "seconds". Due to Swartwout's unwillingness to settle dispute amicably, shots were fired five times, and Swartwout was wounded at least twice, after which Clinton "...declared he would fire no more..." As a result, the surgeons dressed Swartwout's wounds, "...and the gentlemen in their respective barges, returned to the city." A vivid account & great to read. One of the best accounts of a duel we've seen, especially since it involved a famous individual.
