TAOS COUNTY HERAD (note Herald misspelled: see photos), New Mexico, July 8, 1884
* Exceedingly rare and early Taos, New Mexico
This is the volume one, number two issue of what may be the very first newspaper ever published in Taos. Gregory's "Union List of Newspapers" notes it as the earliest, but a website notes "El Crpusculo" published for just 4 issues in Taos, which is disputed by Oswald's "Printing In The America" which notes this newspaper was published in nearby Santa Fe.
In any case this is certainly the first successful--and likely first English language--newspaper published in Taos as it continued for six years, changing its name to "Taos Valley Herald", folding in 1890.
This is actually a bi-lingual newspaper, as this four page issue has the first leaf (pages 1 and 2) printed mostly in English, and the second leaf (pages 3 and 4) having its own masthead and text printed entirely in Spanish (see photos).
This issue is in very nice, clean condition.
A rare opportunity for what was at least the first successful newspaper in Taos, New Mexico.
