PORTER'S SPIRIT OF THE TIMES, New York, April 18, 1857.
* Baseball
* Cricket
* Chess
As noted in the masthead: "A Chronicle of the Turf, Field Sports, Literature and the Stage", this is a volume 1 issue of a very early sporting publication. Near the back of the issue is a column entitled: "Our Chess Department", which includes a chess "problem of the week" in addition to the solution to the problem from the week prior.
Additionally, a small article on page 108 entitled: "Baseball", contains information regarding the events of "the annual meeting of the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club". An accompanying articled titled: "Cricket" discusses upcoming games from the 1857 season.
This issue also has other sporting reports including boxing (Fistiana), Equestrianism, & horseracing. Complete in 16 pages, an ornate sports-themed masthead can also be found on the front page. Although, in relatively good condition, a 1 x 2 inch tear can be found on page 105, which it appears at one point someone attempted to fix.
Background Information: The New York Knickerbockers were one of the first organized baseball teams which played under a set of rules similar to the game today. The team was founded by Alexander Cartwright, considered one of the original developers of modern baseball. source: wikipedia
