WESTERN SENTINEL, Winston, North Carolina, March 6, 1863
* Rare Winston-Salem Confederate Civil War newspaper
* Jefferson Davis Proclamation
This is a very rare title from the Confederacy. According to Brigham only four institutions in the United States have any holdings of this title from the Civil War, most just a few scattered issues. The American Antiquarian Society has no issues recorded from this era.
Nice content in this issue, as the ftpg. has items headed: "An Abolitionist for Peace" and "The Distress Among the Cotton Operatives of France" and "Impressments" and "The Lowest Stage of Human Degradation & Dishonor" which includes: "One at least of the yankee papers has a just appreciatoin of the infamy of the law to enlist 150,000 negroes into Lincoln's army...the project is a degrading one...that we had so little manhood in us as to call to our aid on the field of mortal strife...a race of inferiors to do for us what we...have not the spirit, energy & wisdom to effect for ourselves..." (see photos for full text).
Page 2 has more war-related content including: "The Truth Well Told" "From New Bern" "Counterfeit" "State News" and a bit more.
Page 3 contains: "Latest War News" "From Fredericksburg" "From Kentucky" "The Ironclad 'Indianola' ", but perhaps the best conteint in this issue is the page 3: "A Proclamation By the President" which is signed in type by: Jefferson Davis, which is concerning a day of thanksgiving & prayer (see photos for full text). Also: "The Lincolnite" and "Disaffection in the Northwest" and "Convention of Secessionists at Frankford Kentucky--The Convention Dispersed by the Military".
The bkpg. has: "Mr. Seward's Attempt to Deceive France" and "The Late Naval Attack on Charleston" and a variety of ads, including "A Proclamation" by the governor (see photos).
Complete in 4 pages, a light water stain in the upper right corner does not affect any readability, generally in very nice, clean condition. Measures about 11 1/2 by 17 1/2 inches.
An opportunity for not only a very rare Confederate title, but one with extensive war content.
