Burgoyne surrenders at Saratoga... Letters signed by Howe, Washington, & Hancock...

THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, Dec. 25, 1777 A pg. 2 item mentions: "Two of Gen. Burgoyne's officers are come over in the fleet from New York & bring over the capitulation...Gen. Clinton has returned to New York after his late expedition & detached 4000 men to join Gen. Howe and 1000 men have been ordered from Rhode Island to join Gen. Clinton at New York. The forts on the north river are all destroyed & abandoned by the rebels." Another item notes: "...we have a confirmation of the unfortunate surrender of Burgoyne & his army. We also learn that 4000 troops had been sent from New York to join Gen. Howe in Penna....From these particulars it appears that Gen. Clinton was apprehensive of an attack from the rebels...". Another pg. has a lengthy & terrific letter from George Washington , datelined "Camp near Pembaker's Mill, Oct. 5, 1777" which begins: "Having received intelligence...that general Howe had detached a part of his forces, for the purpose of reducing Belling's fort, & the forts on Delaware...a favourable opportunity offered to make an attack upon the troops which were at & near Germantown..." with much more (see photos), and signed in type: G. WASHINGTON. This is followed by a "P.S." which includes: "...have not received a return of our loss...I fear it is more considerable than I at first apprehended..." which is signed in type: JOHN HANCOCK. Yet another pg. has a lengthy & detailed account which begins: "The following is the best account we have been able to obtain of the damage done to the rebels in the late expedition up the North River between Fort Vaughan & Red Hook..." & what follows is a day by day account (see photos) which takes over half the page & is signed in type: W. Howe. Further on is more war reporting including: "...His Lordship brought the original articles of capitulation between the Generals Burgoyne and Gates...". the bkpg. has some editorializing on the Revolutionary War, including: "In the first place, then, the Americans possess a larger extent of country than ever was possessed by any other rising state...from the best authority that the Americans double their numbers every 25 years..." with more (see photos). Complete in 8 pgs., measures about 8 1/2 by 11 in., small worm hole in the upper right corner affects all leaves but causes no loss of readability, generally in great condition.
