THE EDINBURGH EVENING COURANT, Scotland, June 21, 1780
* General Benjamin Lincoln surrenders to General Henry Clinton
* Charleston, South Carolina, falls to the British
Much of page 2 is taken up with the report from the "Supplement to the London Gazette Extraordinary" which includes the various correspondences between General Benjamin Lincoln and Henry Clinton, including those where Clinton urged Lincoln to surrender but he would not, but then eventually Lincoln agrees to the terms of surrender which Clinton accepts (see photos). And what follows are the: "Articles of Capitulation between...Henry Clinton....and Major General Benjamin Lincoln, commanding in chief in the town & harbour of Charlestown." with all 12 articles & signed in type by H. Clinton and M. Arbuthnot. Also included are the "Return of Ordnance, Arms, & Ammunition in Charlestown when surrendered...".
Page 3 has additional reports on the fall of Charleston as well as other events in the war, with one letter beginning: "From very respectable authority we learn that Sir Henry Clinton, having left a garrison of 5000 men in Charlestown...has already embarked on a new expedition, the object of which is most probably the towns of Virginia situated on James River..." with more (see photos). Another letter from Charlestown begins: "We have at length got possession of this important place with very trifling loss indeed..." and yet another letter from New York begins: "The rebellion is nearly at an end. The rebels, in large numbers, daily come in with their arms & the intelligence which we receive from them is of the most flatttering kind. Washington's army consists only of 1500 men...His head quarters are at Morris-Town..." with more.
Truly a terrific issue not only with interesting reading but with very historic content as well.
Complete in 4 pgs., folio size, nice engraving in the masthead, partial red-inked tax stamp on the ftpg., generally in very nice condition.
