March 10, 1818
Here is a very nice newspaper broadside published by the "Susquehanna Centinel" which was in Montrose, Pennsylvania, dated March 10, 1818. This "EXTRA" edition, as noted above the dateline, contains only one news item, that being a very patriotic "General Order" signed in type by Andrew Jackson, being a call to arms of volunteers to fight in the Seminole War. It is prefaced with a paragraph headed "Tennessee Troops", with the General Order meant to be distributed among the troops after their organization. The entire text is shown in the photos below, with portions including: "Volunteers of West Tennessee--Once more, after a repose of three years, you are summoned to the field. Your country having again need for your services, has appealed to your patriotism & you have met it promptly...the savages on your borders, unwilling to be at peace, have once more raised the tomahawk to shed the blood of our citizens & already they are assembled in considerable force to carry their murderous schemes into execution...Stupid mortals! They have forgotten too soon the streams of blood their ill-fated policy heretofore cost them..." and much more. The remainder of this broadside (printed on one side only) is taken up with a chart of taxes due by township. Never-trimmed margins save for the spine, nice condition, and measures about 12 by 19 1/2 inches. A very rare broadside.
