April 30, 1688
THE LONDON GAZETTE, April 30, 1688 This issue has the text of the second Declaration of Indulgence issued by King James II on April 28, 1788 (introduction is shown in the inset). Interestingly enough, this second Declaration contains the full text of the first Declaration of Indulgence (issued April 4, 1687) for Liberty of Conscience (see inset), which takes most of the front page. At the bottom of the second column is the beginning of the text for the second Declaration of Indulgence, which begins: Ever since we granted this Indulgence, We have made it Our principal Care to see it preserved without Distinction..., and concludes on page 2. The first Declaration basically granted religious freedom to the people of England, while the second Declaration stated that the intentions of the first had not changed. A singlesheet, the reverse has a few ink notations, a few small foxing spots, otherwise in very good condition.
