June 24, 1780

THE NEWCASTLE CHRONICLE, England, June 24, 1780 Almost the entire back page of this folio-size newspaper is taken up with reports and details on the historic Battle of Charleston, South Carolina. This was the heaviest American defeat of the Revolutionary War, wherein American General Benjamin Lincoln surrendered Charleston to the British forces under Gen. H. Clinton. The British lost only 255 men while capturing a 5400 man American garrison, 4 ships & a well-stocked military arsenal & store. This report includes a nearly 1 1/2 column report on the battle signed in type by: H. Clinton, with a list of  "...killed & wounded..." plus additional reports signed in type by B. Lincoln, M. Arbuthnot and H. Clinton. Included also are the "Articles of capitulation between their Excellencies Sir Henry Clinton...and Major General Benjamin Lincoln, Commander in Chief in the town & harbour of Charles Town..." with all 12 articles signed in type by each. A very historic report on this significant battle, and tremendous detail. Complete in 4 pages, never bound nor trimmed, decorative masthead, some wear at edges & the central fold, mostly nice.
