THE MASSACHUSETTS GAZETTE, OR, THE GENERAL ADVERTISER, Springfield, Massachusetts, Oct. 29, 1782 The photo shows the very ornate masthead of this uncommon title which also contains a front page letter from Gen. Greene in which he laments the loss of Lieut.. Col. Laurens, signed in type: N. Greene. A second letter mentions Middletons Farm and describes the action which resulted in the death of Col. Laurens. A pg. 2 "Proclamation" issued by the Congress established November 28 "...as a day of solemn thanksgiving to God...", signed in type: John Hanson. Pg. 3 has "an extract from and excellent letter printed in Philadelphia, addressed to the Abbe Raynal, by Thomas Paine...author of the pamphlet and other publications entitled Common Sense." The letter begins: "The independence of America is at this moment as firmly established as that of any other country in a state of war. It is not length of time but power that gives stability..." and much more of this sentiment. On the bkpg. is a letter about an engagement with the British near Fardos Plantation , signed in type: Francis Marion. Rare to find Marion content, remembered as the "Swamp Fox". A volume I issue(number 25) of this uncommon title which lasted about two years. Has the subscribers name written above the masthead, minor archival mend in the left margin on pg. 3, a bit of lite rubbing and occasional foxing on each leaf, otherwise in good, untrimmed condition.
