May 27, 1863

NEW YORK HERALD from New York, NY and dated May 27, 1863. This vintage 8 page newspaper is in nice condition due to the use of cotton and rag paper during this very historic time in U.S. history. This issue is loaded with advertisements and Civil War reports throughout from the day it was first reported which includes headlines and the following front page maps: "OPERATIONS AROUND VICKSBURG" & "VICKSBURG AND ITS DEFENSES", and much more. This issue also includes "The Strength, Condition, and Position of the Rebels", "The Defences of Richmond", "Vicksburg Deemed Impregnable", and more. A nice piece of history from this rare newspaper.

Historical Background: "In May and June of 1863, Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's armies converged on Vicksburg, investing the city and entrapping a Confederate army under Lt. Gen. John Pemberton. On July 4, Vicksburg surrendered after prolonged siege operations. This was the culmination of one of the most brilliant military campaigns of the war. With the loss of Pemberton's army and this vital stronghold on the Mississippi, the Confederacy was effectively split in half. Grant's successes in the West boosted his reputation, leading ultimately to his appointment as General-in-Chief of the Union armies. Estimated Casualties: 19,233 total (US 10,142; CS 9,091)" source: parknet
