BALLOU'S PICTORIAL, Boston, March 21, 1857  This title was formatted much like the more popular "Harper's Weekly". Among the many prints are a front page print of: "The Author of Home Sweet Home", John Howard Payne.
Also four prints of scenes in "Harrisburg, Pennsylvania" including the Court House and the State House. A related article as well. A one-third page: "View of Geneva, From the Lake" & a print of: "The Island of Nisida, Italy".

This periodical was formatted much like Harper's Weekly but predated it by 6 years (started as Gleason's Pictorial).
Certainly the most significant print in this issue is that of: "Captain J. W. Watkins", significant because it was the very first print by the famed artist Winslow Homer to appear in any periodical. There is a related article on Captain Watkins on the same page.

BALLOU'S PICTORIAL, Boston, June 13, 1857

The front page features one of the earliest Winslow Homer prints to appear in a periodical, in fact just one week after the very first. It is captioned: "Corner of Winter, Washington & Summer Streets, Boston". The initials "WH" are at the lower left of the print. Credit to Homer, with a prophetic message, is in the article, beginning: "The local view upon this page, drawn expressly for us by Mr. Winslow
