NEW YORK HERALD, Aug. 27, 1872  James Gorden Bennett, this newspaper's publisher, capitalized on the 19th century fascination with Africa & the whereabouts of explorer Dr. David Livingstone by hiring journalist Henry Stanley to search for him. Livingstone had ventured to Africa in 1865 for a 2 year expedition with little heard from him since.
So it is of no surprise that the Herald offered extraordinary coverage of the adventures of Stanley and Livingstone in Africa.

GLEASON'S PICTORIAL LINE-OF-BATTLE SHIP, Boston, Aug. 27, 1859  This title has one of the more beautiful & ornate mastheads of the 19th century, plus each page is bordered with an anchor & chain devise (see).
The front page has prints of: "Charles XV, the New King of Sweden" with text on him. Also: "Whitehall, South & Staten Island Ferries, & Revenue Barge Office, New York" with text. Among inside page prints is: "Toronto Boat Club Coming Into the Harbor"

NEW YORK TIMES, Aug. 27, 1865  Page 5 has over a full column of reports on Captain Henry Wirz, the convicted war criminal who served as a Confederate Army officer.
He was the commandant of Andersonville Prison, a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp near Andersonville, Georgia, where nearly 13,000 Union Army prisoners of war died as a result of inhumane conditions. After the war, Wirz was tried and executed for conspiracy and murder relating to his command of the camp.

NEW HAMPSHIRE PATRIOT, Concord, August 27, 1814  A great issue with the memorable rallying cry from the War of 1812 "Don't give up the Ship!" used as a campaign slogan on the front page.
As a bit of history, Captain James Lawrence's famous cry was at the Battle of Lake Erie, eleven months prior. It quickly became the motto of the U.S. Navy, and as we see here was adopted as a political slogan as well.
