Townsend, so called, of the slaver Echo, was brought before the U.S. Commissioner...It was distinctly proved that the Echo attempted to escape before her character was suspected...There were found on board 318 African negroes..." with much more on how the capture happened.

This rare title from the Midwestern United States has some Civil War reporting and several interesting advertisements of the day.
This issue measures 25 x 18 inches, not fragile as newsprint from this era was made of cotton and linen rags, allowing them to remain very pliable and easy to handle. Complete in 4 pages, light staining along spine, nice condition.
SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, New York, September 16, 1876 The cover has "Lyall's Great Textile Exhibit at the Centennial" with an accompanying article inside. Also inside is: "The Detachable Handles Parasol and Sun Umbrella"; "The Positive Motion Shuttle"; "The Lidgerwood Rotary Engine"; "New and Curious Electrical Experiments" and more articles, illustrations and advertisements.
Complete in sixteen pages, never bound but does have two holes from being in a binder, otherwise is in nice condition.
