background: Elliott Speer, the headmaster of Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts, was mysteriously murdered on the night of September 14, 1934. He was shot through the window of his study while working late. The high-profile case shocked the academic and religious communities, as Speer was a respected educator and devout Christian. Despite an intensive investigation, which included theories involving school politics, disgruntled former employees, and broader conspiracy notions, the case was never solved. The murder remains one of New England's enduring unsolved mysteries.
