We find that reports on the now-famous Lincoln Douglas debates are very difficult to find in newspapers outside of Illinois, perhaps not surprising because it was a senate race in Illinois and Lincoln was, at this time, still a relatively unknown figure in American politics.

HARPER'S WEEKLY, New York, August 25, 1860 Perhaps the most significant print in this issue is the back page political cartoon captioned: "The Coming Man's Presidential Career, a la Blondin" showing a beardless Abe Lincoln with an African-American on his shoulders. (Blondin was a famous tightrope walker who had walked across Niagara Falls on a rope the year prior).
