As the most widely read illustrated newspaper for most of its years of publication, Harper’s Weekly provided a visual face to the Civil War, Reconstruction, and Westward Expansion. The archive is famous for the collectible work of illustrators Winslow Homer and Frederic Remington, as well as Thomas Nast—whose cartoons gave us the enduring Santa Claus, Republican Elephant, and Democratic Donkey.
