Winslow Homer's "Our Watering Places--The Empty Sleeve at Newport"... At a bargain...

Item # 730686 ·

HARPER'S WEEKLY (single print), New York, Aug. 26, 1865  This authentic, stand-alone, full-page woodcut engraving features Winslow Homer's sought after "Our Watering Places - The Empty Sleeve at Newport" (showing a Civil War veteran with one arm missing), from an original November 15, 1862 issue of Harper's Weekly.

The artistic significance of this print lies in its subtle, emotionally charged commentary on the immediate post-Civil War era. Published just months after the cessation of hostilities, the scene depicts a fashionable young couple riding in a carriage through the upscale resort town of Newport, Rhode Island, with the young officer's folded, empty sleeve quietly revealing the loss of his arm in combat. Homer brilliantly contrasts the tranquil luxury of high-society life with the permanent physical and psychological scars borne by returning Union soldiers. Masterfully executing the delicate transition from wartime conflict to national recovery, this print stands as one of Homer's most moving Reconstruction-era works and remains exceptionally desirable among collectors of Civil War Americana and 19th-century fine art.

Single full-page print, measuring approximately 10 1/2 by 15 3/4 inches, in good overall condition; however, a small corner tear in the lower left corner has been archivally mended on the reverse side. A close-up photo of the mended tear has been provided. A great opportunity to own this desirable print at less than half price. To view the listing for a complete issue for this date, go to 172914.
