Only one issue is recorded in the United States...
KLINE'S CARLISLE WEEKLY GAZETTE, Pennsylvania, May 25, 1796
- Extremely rare 18th century American publication
This is a very scarce title from 18th century America. Brigham's "History & Bibliography of American Newspapers" notes that only the American Antiquarian Society has this issue.
The entire front page is taken up with reports from the "Federal Legislature".
Most of pages 2 & 3 are taken up with European reports, but page 3 does have: "Indian News" from Lexington, Ky. and a detailed: "War Office of the United States" document by the Secretary of War, concerning the distribution of promised lands.
Four pages, excellent condition.
Background: The extreme rarity of this May 25, 1796 issue of Kline’s Carlisle Weekly Gazette is underscored by its near-total absence from the world’s premier historical repositories, making any surviving copy an extraordinary numismatic and bibliographical find. In his seminal, definitive reference work, History and Bibliography of American Newspapers (1690–1820), legendary bibliographer Clarence S. Brigham documented that the American Antiquarian Society held the only known copy of this specific date. Because 18th-century rural Pennsylvania newspapers were printed in highly limited quantities on fragile rag paper and were routinely discarded, repurposed, or lost to fires, the survival rate for individual issues is infinitesimally small. Finding a complete, four-page copy of this exact edition outside of a major institutional archive—let alone one preserved in excellent condition—renders it a virtually unique artifact of early American print culture.
