SUNBURY DAILY, Pennsylvania, June 15, 1877
- Rare 19th century publication
A small-size folio newspaper that is quite rare, for although 3 institutions have some holdings none have any issues prior to 1881. It is curious that Gregory notes this title was suspended from 1876 - 1879.
Four pages, 10 by 13 1/2 inches, some wear at folds with some archival mends, scattered foxing.
Background: The June 15, 1877 issue of the Sunbury Daily (Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania) is an exceptionally rare piece of American print ephemera that directly challenges established 19th-century newspaper bibliography. Although institutional union catalogs—most notably Winifred Gregory's landmark American Newspapers 1821–1936—record no extant holdings prior to 1881 and document an official publication suspension from 1876 to 1879, the physical existence of this complete four-page, small-folio edition provides definitive primary proof that the paper remained active during this supposed dark period. This single issue fills an unrecorded gap across major archive holdings, offering an extremely scarce primary-source lens into late-Reconstruction-era Pennsylvania—capturing the pivotal rail transit, anthracite coal commerce, and local civic developments of Sunbury along the Susquehanna River just weeks before the Great Railroad Strike of July 1877 swept through the region's transportation hubs.
