This Boston newspaper existed for just 55 issues...

Item # 715858 ·
FEDERAL GAZETTE AND DAILY ADVERTISER, Boston, Jan. 4, 1798

* Rare 18th century publication
* President John Adams

Certainly one of the less common 18th century American newspapers, as it was short-lived, lasting just 55 issues from Jan. 1 thru March 5, 1798. This is the number 4 issue.
All of pages 2 & 4 are taken up with reports from: "Congress of the United States" including a lengthy address of the Senate to Adams' recent state-of-the-union address, followed by his reply signed in type: John Adams. Same with a report from the House, replied to by the President, signed: John Adams.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, small archival mend to the inside spine, good condition.

Background: The historical significance of this issue lies in its rare, comprehensive snapshot of a nation on the brink of war during the volatile John Adams administration. Published in early 1798, these pages capture the formal, high-stakes choreography between Congress and the President as they navigated the "Quasi-War" with France—a period of intense diplomatic crisis, naval skirmishes, and deep partisan division over national defense and foreign policy. The inclusion of official, type-signed responses from John Adams to both the Senate and the House underscores the geopolitical tension of the era, serving as a primary source of the executive and legislative branches attempting to project a unified front to a fractured public. From a journalistic standpoint, the document is exceptionally scarce; because the Federal Gazette and Daily Advertiser was a short-lived venture that folded after just 55 issues, surviving copies of issue number 4 are incredibly rare artifacts, making this four-page newspaper a highly prized and elusive piece of early American printing history.
