April 17, 1951
THE NEW YORK TIMES, April 17, 1951
* The day when a MLB legend debuted at Yankee Stadium
* Mickey Mantle makes his Major League Baseball premiere
* New York Yankees successor to Joe DiMaggio vs. Red Sox
The top of page 36 has a three-column heading: "Yanks Face Red Sox Today" with subheads. Text includes: "Stengel is putting the fabulous 19-year old Mickey Mantle in right field and may start two other rookies..." and "Mantle already has become a spring legend..." (see images) He is also mentioned in an editorial on the same page. (see images)
Great to have in this publication, the home of the Yankees. I suspect this to be an extremely rare item because there was really no reason to save it at the time.
Complete with all 60 pages, light toning at the margins, very nice condition.
Background: On April 17, 1951, a nineteen-year-old Mickey Mantle stepped onto the hallowed grass of Yankee Stadium for his Major League debut, officially ushering in a new era for the "Bronx Bombers" as the successor to Joe DiMaggio. Sporting No. 6 instead of his iconic No. 7, the young phenom from Oklahoma started in right field and batted third in the lineup against the rival Boston Red Sox. While the nerves of a 30,000-person opening day crowd might have rattled others, Mantle signaled his potential in the sixth inning by driving an RBI single into right field off pitcher Bill Wight, contributing to a 5–0 Yankees victory. This debut wasn't just a game; it was the launch of a career defined by breathtaking power and tragic physical fragility, beginning a journey that would eventually yield 536 home runs and seven World Series titles despite the devastating knee injury he would suffer just months later in the 1951 World Series.
