background: The 1936 Secaucus expulsion wasn't just a local school board spat; it was the explosive catalyst for a legal revolution that redefined the very soul of American liberty. By upholding the removal of the Hering sisters, the New Jersey Supreme Court unwittingly ignited a high-stakes constitutional firestorm that forced the U.S. Supreme Court to confront a chilling question: Can the state force its citizens to worship a symbol? This case paved the path to the landmark Barnette decision, which shattered the government’s power to mandate patriotism and birthed the modern "right to remain silent." It transformed the classroom from a laboratory of forced conformity into a sanctuary for the individual conscience, proving that in a true democracy, the most powerful form of loyalty is the kind that cannot be coerced.
