background: On August 28, 1931, Mahatma Gandhi departed Simla for Bombay, marking the conclusion of a high-stakes diplomatic standoff with the British Viceroy, Lord Willingdon, and the beginning of his historic voyage to the Second Round Table Conference in London. This departure was only made possible by a last-minute "Settlement" reached the previous day, which salvaged the Gandhi-Irwin Pact after disputes over peasant grievances in Gujarat had threatened to keep the Indian National Congress from the negotiating table. Traveling as the sole representative of the Congress, Gandhi boarded the S.S. Rajputana on August 29, accompanied by close associates like Mahadev Desai and Sarojini Naidu. His journey from the Himalayan summer capital to the heart of the British Empire was more than a political mission; it was a symbolic projection of Indian self-reliance, as Gandhi maintained his austere lifestyle of spinning khadi and sleeping on the ship's deck while preparing to challenge British sovereignty on the global stage.
