background: Richard Queen’s release on July 11, 1980, was a sudden and surreal transition from the dark "Mushroom Inn" to international headlines, triggered by a desperate Iranian government fearing he might die in their custody. After months of his health deteriorating—marked by severe dizziness and the inability to walk—Queen was finally seen by an Iranian neurologist who realized the gravity of his condition (later confirmed as multiple sclerosis). On the morning of his release, he was abruptly handed over by the militants to a representative of the Iranian president and driven to the Tehran airport with no prior warning; it was only when he was officially transferred to the care of Swiss diplomats that he realized he was actually going home. He was flown to Zurich and then to a U.S. military hospital in West Germany, appearing gaunt and weak but remarkably spirited, famously telling reporters he was "feeling better" while expressing deep, vocal guilt over leaving 52 of his colleagues behind in the embassy.
