Printing the Declaration of Independence... Battle of Sullivan's Island... Patrick Henry...
Item # 719174
July 24, 1776
THE CONNECTICUT JOURNAL, New Haven, July 24, 1776 A great issue from less than 3 weeks after the Declaration of Independence was endorsed by Congress. Relating to this, page 2 has a report from New York: "Thursday last the Declaration of the INDEPENDENCY of the United States of AMERICA, was published at the Court House." A very notable report and great to have in a period newspaper.
Page 2 begins with a letter from Major General Lee to the President of Congress, dated at Charleston, giving a nice account of the Battle of Sullivan's Island, an unsuccessful effort by the British. This detailed account takes over half the page & is followed by an order that Congress be published, signed in type: John Hancock, President.
Page 3 has several items relating to the Revolutionary War including a report from Congress dated July 11, 1776 signed in type: John Hancock, President. Also a letter from Crown Point dated July 3, 1776, and other reports from Providence, New London, and New Haven.
There is also: "A Proclamation" by the governor of Connecticut concerning General Schuyler and his success at Crown Point, granting pardon to all deserters of the Continental army in the Northern Dept.
The back page has a rather rare newspaper report datelines "Williamsburg, June 29, 1776" which includes: "This day PATRICK HENRY, Esq., was chosen governor of this country and a committee appointed to acquaint him therewith; to which he returned the following answer to the Convention." and what follows is a nice letter to the president of the Convention signed in type by: Patrick Henry, Jun. One bit from his letter: "...When I reflect that the tyranny of the British King and Parliament hath kindled a formidable war now raging throughout this wide extended Continents..." and much more.
Four pages, small folio size, never-trimmed margins, a bit of foxing & light damp staining, some light inking, but generally in nice condition.
