GAZETTE OF THE UNITED STATES, New York, Aug. 8, 1789  Page 2 features an address of the New York Legislature to the President of the United States congratulating him on assuming the Presidency. It is followed by his response which is signed in type: George Washington.
Pages 2 & 3 contain reports from the federal House of Representatives, beginning: "...informing the Hon. House that they had concurred with amendments in the bills for establishing the War Department--and for establishing the government of the Western Territory..." plus much more discussions from Congress from these early months of the new federal government. Also mention of the latest information concerning relations with Indians.
Page 3 has an item beginning: "...arrived here...which brings a report of the assassination of the celebrated Paul Jones by a British officer in the Russian naval service: But we can collect no particulars of this horrid transaction..." and more. This would prove to be a false report.
The entire back page is taken up with the beginning of: "An Act to Regulate the Collection of the Duties imposed by Law on the Tonnage of Ships and Vessels...", continued in future issues.
