British sheepskin document from 1742...
Large sheepskin document from England "This Indenture" in ornate lettering at the top with engravings within, dated near the top: "...in the year of or Lord one thousand seven hunbdred and forty-two..." followed by various details. There are five red wax seals next to signatures at the bottom.
This is an unusual two page document with a blue embossed tax stamp in the margin on each.
This document folds out to measure 22 by 29 inches. Several folds, very handsome handwriting, nice condition. A terrific display item.
Background: This 1742 George II English indenture stands out for its exceptional physical scale and complex multi-party execution, making it a particularly fine collectible specimen of 18th-century conveyancing. While single-sheet property transactions from this era are relatively common, a multi-page multipartite sheepskin document measuring an impressive 22 by 29 inches with five distinct red wax seals and signatures indicates a high-stakes legal matter—such as a complex land settlement, aristocratic lease and release, or substantial marriage agreement—involving numerous primary stakeholders rather than a simple two-party sale. The inclusion of intact blue embossed tax stamps with paper backings on both leaves further adds to its historical authenticity and display appeal, as these legal revenue seals are often damaged, clipped, or lost over time. Preserved in nice condition with sharp calligraphic script and decorative top margins, its substantial size and multi-seal execution set it well above standard period deeds in visual impact and historical interest.
