Terrific article on the Erie Canal...

Item # 714592
October 12, 1821
THE UNION, Philadelphia, Oct. 12, 1821

* Constructing the Erie Canal
* Albany to Buffalo, New York

Over half of page 2 is taken up with a very detailed discussion on the Erie Canal headed: "Internal Improvement" noting in part: "...The canal in question, when completed, will extend from the Hudson river near Albany, to Buffaloe at the north eastern extremity of Lake Erie...But it is not merely those who reside on the very borders of the lakes that are to be benefited by the Canal..." and so much more.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, some creases and a tiny hole near the center neither of which affects the canal article.

background: The 1821 report in The Union captures a pivotal moment in American history when the Erie Canal transitioned from a ridiculed "pipe dream" into a tangible engine of national transformation. By focusing on "Internal Improvement," the article underscores the era's shift toward the "American System," arguing that the canal's 363-mile stretch would function as a commercial artery connecting the Atlantic seaboard to the vast resources of the Old Northwest. The author’s assertion that benefits would extend far beyond the lake borders was prophetic; the canal ultimately slashed freight costs by roughly 90%, effectively ending the geographic isolation of the frontier and turning New York City into the nation's premier port. In Philadelphia, such detailed coverage likely carried a sting of competitive anxiety, as local merchants realized that this "ditch" through the Appalachian wilderness would soon divert the flow of Western trade away from Pennsylvania’s traditional wagon routes and toward the Hudson River.

Item from last month's catalog - #364 - released for March, 2026.
