THE STARS AND STRIPES - EXTRA, Germany Edition,  May 8, 1945

* Germany Surrenders
* V-E day - Nazis quit
* Great title to have in

This famous newspaper is subtitled: "Daily News of U.S. Armed Forces in the European Theater of Operations", and being the "Germany Edition" it is perhaps the very best newspaper in which to have the historic report of V-E Day, the end of World War II in Europe.
"Stars And Stripes" had at least six editions during the war. For this date we've offered editions from Paris, Nice-Marseille, London, Mediterranean, Southern Germany, and Germany. Each edition had a different headline, and without question, the most desired by collectors would be the Germany edition with the huge headline: "NAZIS QUIT ! " and "Doenitz Gives Order" taking most of the front page.
There is limited text, beginning: "Unconditional surrender of all German forces was announced yesterday by the German radio at Flensburg...".
More related text on the other 3 pages.
Complete as a 4 page newspaper, 11 by 15 1/4 inches, never bound nor trimmed, two creases to the back leaf, some light dirtiness, generally nice condition.
A perfect issue for display giving the headline and the small size.

background: The Germany Edition of The Stars and Stripes for May 8, 1945, stands as a visceral artifact of the Allied triumph, defined by its stark, uncompromising headline—"NAZIS QUIT!"—printed in massive, bold type that dominated the front page. Unlike the more celebratory tone of the London or Paris editions, this "Extra" issue resonated with the grit of the front lines, featuring the immediate news of Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz’s surrender order and the official cessation of hostilities at 0241 hours in Reims. Spanning four pages, the paper balanced the euphoria of V-E Day with the pragmatic realities of the G.I. experience, moving from Eisenhower’s solemn tributes to the fallen on the interior pages to the "Point System" breakdown on the back, which addressed the soldiers' most pressing question: the criteria for finally returning home. Captured on requisitioned German presses, this edition served not just as a news report, but as a definitive psychological closure for the troops who had fought their way across the Rhine to see the total collapse of the Third Reich.
