White slaves in Kentucky...
Item # 711986
June 09, 1821
NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, June 9, 1821 The back page has a curious item from Kentucky with a small headline: "White Slaves" which reads in part: "...A laudable indignation was universally manifested among our citizens, and even among our blacks...by the exposure of a woman & two children for sale at public auction...This woman and children were as white as any of our citizens...That they were not slaves we do not pretend to say, but there was something so revolting to the feeling...so forcibly the morality of slave-holding states--that not a person was found to make an offer for them...Who can think of this and not shudder?...We trust we shall not see a second attempt to sell them in this town..." with more.
This is followed by an equally interesting report of prejudice against a European in Africa.
Sixteen pages, 6 by 9 1/2 inches, very nice, clean condition.
As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
