January 10, 1800
THE NEWBURYPORT HERALD & COUNTRY GAZETTE, Massachusetts, Jan. 10, 1800  All of the outer margins on all four pages have wide black mourning rules for the recent death of George Washington.
Some fine covers inside, with an article headed: "Washington's Last Illness" datelined at Alexandria, Dec. 21, with much detail on his final moments. This is the famous report of Washington's attending physicians, signed by them: James Craik and Elisha Dick.
A few bits include: "...having been exposed to a rain...General WASHINGTON was attacked with an inflammatory affection...The disease commenced with a violent ague..some pain in the upper & fore part of the throat...The necessity of blood-lettering suggesting itself to the General, he procured a bleeder in the neighborhood who took from his arm...12 or 14 ounces of blood...The power of life seems now manifestly yielding to the fore of the disorder...was painful from the beginning, now became almost practicable; respiration became more & more contracted...till half after11 on Saturday night retaining the full possession of his intellect--when he expired without a struggle..." with more.
This is followed by over a full column headed: "FUNERAL PROCESSION In Honor of the Late Commander in Chief of the Armies of the United States, General George Washington. And then: "Funeral Honors at Newark" carrying over to page 3.
Page 3 has fine content as well with several messages, and: "Tribute Of Respect".
Four pages, archival strengthening at the blank spine which had various disbinding indents (not affecting text), very nice condition.
