Item # 694362 ·

THE WEEKLY RECORDER, Chillicothe, Ohio, Oct. 29, 1817

* Very rare publication
* 1st & 3rd capital of Ohio
* Ross County

A very early Ohio newspaper rarely offered today. Our database indicates we only offered one other issue of this title, that being 12 years ago, and it was a damaged issue.
Complete in 8 pages, 10 by 12 1/2 inches, never bound nor trimmed, very nice condition.

Background: This specific October 29, 1817 issue of The Weekly Recorder is a document of profound historical importance and exceptional material rarity. Published in Chillicothe—Ohio’s first state capital and a major frontier hub—by John Andrews starting in 1814, The Weekly Recorder is widely recognized by journalism historians as one of the very first religious and moral newspapers in the United States, predating the mainstream expansion of the American evangelical press. Beyond its theological commentary, the paper served as a vital cultural archive for the early Northwest Territory, documenting local obituaries, political developments, and early social reform movements like anti-slavery sentiments and temperance years before they gained national momentum. The surviving physical format of this specific 8-page artifact exponentially amplifies its value to collectors and institutions; because early 19th-century newspapers were routinely trimmed, punctured, and bound into heavy library volumes, finding an issue that has remained loose, completely untrimmed, and in its original, pristine condition is an extraordinary anomaly. Given that market records show this title surfaces barely once a decade—and usually only as a damaged specimen—this intact, raw issue represents a uniquely preserved, museum-grade window into the religious, political, and social fabric of early American frontier life.
